Cats are great pets. They can be silly, cute, and are great cuddlers on cold nights. They also have amazing abilities to jump more than twice their height and their vision in the dark exceeds ours. Cats have a lot of interesting biological, behavioral, and historical facts that many of us may not know. After a little sleuthing I found some fun and cool facts about cats that may make all of us say, “Wow!” and look at our felines with a little more awe.
1: In Siam, the cat was revered so much that one rode in a chariot at the head of the parade celebrating when there was a new king.
2: Cats come back to being completely alert from a state of sleep faster than other creatures.
3: If a cat snores or rolls over exposing her belly it is a sign of trust.
4: The whiskers not only measure distance but they also can sense changes in air pressure, which is why flying or going in an elevator can be upsetting to them.
5: Cat urine can glow under black light.
6: They can make over 100 different vocal sounds. Dogs can only make 10.
7: A group of cats is called a Clowder.
8: Cats favor a paw when doing activities like us and may be left pawed or right pawed.
9: Their sense of smell is 14 times stronger than humans.
10: When you throw a treat you may sometimes notice that they can’t find it. They can smell but can’t seem to find it. It’s because they can’t see directly under their nose.
11: Cats have a peripheral vision that extends up to 280 degrees.
12: Tortoiseshell cats are almost always female, just as orange cats are almost always male.
