4 Great Places to Meet Other Pet Lovers

Aren’t there just days when you mutter to yourself, “I like my dog/cat/bird/ferret more than people?” No? Just me? Well, ok. People who love animals bond easily to pets and will gladly pet another person’s dog or smile at a kitten in a window of a house. Having a pet can be fun and make the house feel a little warmer. It can also make meeting new friends pretty easy. Even if you’re sort of shy, like me, conversation can start about your pets which means you already have something in common, a love of pets and animals.

Here are 4 of the best ways you can make friends with your pet

  1. Dog Park – being out with your dog can put you a little at ease. Dog owners tend to talk about their pets and attention can be turned to the dogs and not about you to break the ice. After all, a bunch of dogs playing tag is really fun to watch and can make you all smile and laugh
  2. Coffee Shop that allows pets – You may find someone asking you what breed your dog is, if s/he can pet him, or other questions. You may find yourself talking about the best places to hang out with your dog, ask if they own one, and have a short but nice conversation.
  3. Meet up groups – there are local meet up groups in many towns and cities for pet lovers, some are dog breed specific, some are size specific like “small dog meet up,” and some are for those who love cat breeds and birds. They are social gatherings where you can easily show up, hang out, and meet new people who also adore and admire pets like you do. Some meet at dog parks, some gather and find fun activities to do with and without pets, and others work to increase awareness about animal welfare.
  4. Obedience classes – training classes offer a lot of ways to break the ice with new people and potential friends. You can swap stories of what your dogs do. “My dog eats anything in the yard he finds.” “My dog barks at passing cars when we’re driving somewhere.” “My dog logs onto my Ameritrade account and sells my stocks.” Whatever the stories, you’re sure to make a friend.
