Dog-Friendly Vacationing in Iowa City, Iowa

Iowa City is a small city that used to be the state capital. The University of Iowa is also in this city, which is situated in the southeastern area of the state. The Iowa River also flows through Iowa City. There is an off-leash dog park here, along with a handful of other outdoor activities.

Herbert Hoover National Historic Site

The Herbert Hoover National Historic site consists of the birthplace of Herbert Hoover, which is a small cottage, along with the Presidential Library and Museum and the grave site of the former president and his wife. There is also an 81-acre tall grass prairie with walking trails and seasonal wildflowers. Leashed dogs may be outside, but are not allowed in any of the buildings. It is located in West Branch, Iowa.

North Liberty Farmer’s Market

The North Liberty Farmer’s Market is in North Liberty, Iowa, and occurs on Sundays from early May through late October from 1:00-4:00 PM. Leashed dogs are welcome at this market.

Thornberry Off-Leash Dog Park

The Thornberry Off-Leash Dog Park is a fenced-in site that is 11 acres in size. The park is divided into an area for small dogs, an area for all dogs and an area for training and agility. There is also a pond for dogs to swim, as well as portable restrooms for humans. Fees apply to use this park.

Devonian Fossil Gorge

The Devonian Fossil Gorge is a site where a huge flood occurred in 1993 over Coralville Lake, which resulted in eroding a channel that exposed the bedrock deposits beneath. It is a great place for those into geology who can walk around and observe the rocks and fossils. Dogs can explore the site with their owners if they are on a leash of less than six feet.

Atlas is an eclectic restaurant that serves lots of fresh, local dishes along with exotic ones. They also serve wine and have a full bar. Leashed dogs can sit at the outdoor tables.

Buffalo Wild Wings

Buffalo Wild Wings is a chain sports bar and grill that has a location in Iowa City. They serve bar food and American-style dishes. Leashed dogs are allowed at the outer tables.
