Dog-Friendly Vacationing in Lexington, Kentucky

Lexington, Kentucky is “The Horse Capital of the World,” along with the second largest city in the state. It is also in the heart of the Bluegrass Region. There are a few fun outdoor attractions t around Lexington to explore with your dog, as well as a well-developed network of off-leash dog parks.

Attractions

American Saddlebred Museum

This museum is dedicated to preserving and presenting the traditions and heritage of the American Saddlebred Horse. It is located on the grounds of the Kentucky Horse Park, and has the largest collection of artifacts on Saddlebreds. Leashed dogs can go around the landscaped grounds, but they are not allowed in any of the buildings.

University of Kentucky Campus

This historic university dates back to its foundation in 1865, and has over 700 acres to explore. Leashed dogs are allowed to walk around the campus with you.

Chrisman Mill Winery

This winery has a retail location in Lexington, in the Hamburg Pavilion Shopping Center. They have a tasting room for wine and other things to eat. Small dogs can be carried into this shop, and larger dogs are allowed at the outdoor tables.

Off-Leash Dog Parks

Cold Stream Dog Park

This wonderful dog park is located within greater Coldstream Park. There are 12 acres where dogs are allowed off-leash, enclosed by horse-farm style fencing with mesh backing.

Jacobson Dog Park

This dog park is located within greater Jacobson Park. It is fenced and takes up three acres and has some shade trees. They are looking to expand and improve this park.

Masterson Station Dog Park

This dog park is located within greater Masterson Park. There are six acres fenced in for dogs, enclosed by horse-style fencing and mesh backing. There are also mature trees for shade, as well as a hydrant that provides water.

Wellington Dog Park

Wellington Dog Park will re-open spring 2010 with new acres added onto the existing ones. Its premises are enclosed by horse-style fencing with mesh backing, and it has lots of shade trees.

Outdoor Restaurants

Azur Restaurant and Patio

This is an innovative restaurant that has contemporary American-style dishes, and a European-inspired design. Leahsed dogs are allowed to join you at the upper patio.

Good Foods Market and Cafe

This is a consumer-owned market that has all sorts of organic and fresh foods and drinks. They also have a hot food bar and salad bar. Leashed dogs can sit at the outdoor seating area for the cafe/deli.
