Syracuse, New York, is located right in the center of the state. It is an economic hub, home to Syracuse University and some other smaller schools. Though the downtown area might not currently be the most bustling place, there are a few outdoor attractions to explore and a couple restaurants in the city. Syracuse is located near Skaneateles Lake, which is one of the cleanest lakes in the country, and the town makes for a good day trip.

Skaneateles is a nice little town located on the lakeside. The downtown area has a few nicely restored historic buildings, some of which date back to 1796. You can walk around the downtown area with your dog, and go check out the lakeside’s scenic views.

Wegman’s Good Dog Park

This dog park is located in Liverpool, New York, in Onondaga Lake Park (use the Cold Springs entrance). It was Central New York’s first dog park, and is a double-gated, fenced-in area that is over 40,000 square feet. It features an exercise area that has tunnels, jumps, bridges and red fire hydrants. Other amenities include benches, drinking water and waste clean-up stations. There is also a separate area for small dogs. It is open daily from sunrise to sunset.

The Greater Onondaga Lake Park is expansive, with free Wi-Fi everywhere, areas along the lake and fields for picnics. Dogs must be leashed to go in the other parts of the park.

Jamesville Beach Park Off-Leash Area

While dogs are not allowed on the beach of Jamesville Beach Park, the park does have a small off-leash area.

Green Lakes State Park

Probably the nicest park in the area, Green Lakes State Park is located in Fayetteville, New York. The park is situated around two glacial lakes, called Green Lake and Round Lake, which appear to be green in color and are surrounded by beautiful forest. People and dogs can enjoy the hiking trails that go around both lakes. Dogs must be on a leash shorter than 6 feet.

Outdoor Restaurants

Dinosaur Barbeque

Dinosaur Barbeque is Syracuse’s most famous restaurant, with tons of meats, homemade BBQ sauces and a full bar. They also have live music sometimes. It was started by bikers. Leashed dogs can sit at the outdoor tables.

This Italian restaurant serves assorted homemade pasta, sauces, soups salads and wines. Leashed dogs can join you at the outer tables.
