Hartz: Pet Treat Recall

Hey fellow dog lovers, check the labels and brands of dog treats you have in your cupboards. Hartz Mountain Corp announced a voluntary withdrawal of two brands of treats: Hartz Chicken Chews and the Hartz Oinkie Pig Skin Twists with Chicken. These treats are sold across the U.S. and may have been in contact with antiobiotic residue.

Sean McNear, the Senior Director of Quality and Regulatory at Harrtz stated, “Even though two-thirds of the products we tested did not contain antibiotic residues, we would rather be overly cautious by voluntarily withdrawing these products from the market.” None of the other Hartz treats have been affected.

In the last couple of years there have been several recalls over pet treats. If your pet has eaten some contaminated treats, here are some signs to watch for:

  1. vomiting
  2. drooling
  3. diarrhea
  4. lethargy

Some pets have experienced kidney failure from eating treats that were contaminated and in January Nestle Purina recalled the Waggin’ Tail and Canyon Creek Ranch dog treats from shelves. Milo’s Kitchen also recalled their Chicken Jerky and Chicken Grillers Homestyle treats.

The Hartz brands affected by the voluntary recall are:

  • 3.5 oz Hartz Chicken Chews
  • 8oz Hartz Chicken Chews
  • 16 oz Hartz Chicken Chews
  • 20 oz Hartz Chicken Chews
  • 24 oz Hartz Chicken Chews
  • 5.7 oz Hartz Chicken Chews – Soft and Tender Bite-Sized
  • 16 oz Hartz Chicken Chews – Soft and Tender Bite-Sized
  • 7 pack Mini Pig Skin Twists wrapped with Chicken
  • 5 pack Pig Skin Twists wrapped with Chicken
  • 15 pack Mini Pig Skin Twists wrapped with Chicken
  • 20 pack Pig Skin Twist Sticks

If you have these products, you are urged to contact Hartz 1-800-275-1414 or visit their Website. To see a list of products that have been recalled, please visit the American Veterinary Medical Association website for a full list of current recalls.
