Skunked? Don’t use tomato juice.

For as long as I remember, tomato juice baths were the anecdote to get rid of the smell if a dog gets skunked. However, that’s a myth. According to Dr. Gary Ryder, a tomato juice bath does not work. It will leave your dog smelling like skunk and tomato soup.

Instead, Dr. Ryder recommends the following mix:
1 quart of hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup of baking soda
1 tablespoon of dish soap
Let this mixture stay on your pet for about 15 minutes before rinsing it off so it can break down the components of the skunk smell. The dish soap is important because it will break down and wash away the skunk’s oil-based spray.

He also recommends wearing old clothes that can be thrown away if they get stained and protective gloves.

If your pet was sprayed in the face, use saline solution to rinse out the eyes and do your best to rinse out your pet’s mouth with cool water.

Also, it’s good to know when skunks may be out and about. Dusk and dawn are the most likely times you may encounter a skunk. You can discourage skunks from your home by making sure there is no food outside that they can get into and minimizing the amount of spilled seeds from bird feeders. It may also help discourage other unwanted critters like raccoons and mice.
