Talking To Your Pet May Be A Sign Of Intelligence

Pets can be great at listening. They may tilt their heads, purr, or come over and sit on your lap when you say something. While we may not have complete conversations with our pets, talking to them, asking them questions like “Is it dinner time?” or “Who wants to go for a walk?” may not be seen as kooky anymore… according to Nicholas Epley, a professor at the University of Chicago, people who converse with their pets may be a sign of intelligence.

While anthropomorphizing a pet can limit a pet’s reactions or behavior to human traits, it also exercises our brains. Professor Epley finds that giving human traits to pets as well as objects is a sign of an active brain. A brain that is programmed to see and perceive minds. Now, I know… talking to your dog in full on conversation might get you some strange looks from other people while on a walk, but I don’t think anyone will bat an eye if you ask your dog, “Who’s a good puppy?” or “Is it time to go home now?”
