John - you might consider the Beagle then. The right size, not too small, not too much shedding, and very loving. One thing about Beagles though, they can adopt quite the loud and woeful whine when you leave the house. I have encountered this a couple times and would guess they do not take well to being left alone. So that might prove difficult if you are in motels and have to go out to eat. and you can't always leave an animal in your car or truck while you eat due to weather conditions. But you should ask a Beagle expert - my experience with the breed is limited.

I have two boxers of my own: lucy(brindle), crook (fawn). They are both adorable little kids in their own world. They love to have fun, and are great with kids, but watch their tail, it REALLY hurts! I have a cat, Ming, and the trio get along fantasticly!!! They both are very protective, and bark at our doorbell. But they do get into mischief like pooing in the house if you dont let them out, or tearing apart a shoe or stuffed animal. But that is very rare and only happens when they feel neglected and bored. If you need a family dog that loves to play consider a boxer!!!!

I'm not surprised that the German Shepherd came in fourth.
These are honestly the best all round dog (not to mention good looking) my girl is 12 months old and already is proving to live up to her reputation as a great all rounder.

The Australian Terrier, (which when crossed with a Yorkshire terrier produced the Sydney Silky Terrier) is well worth considering. They are a bit bigger than a Yorkie but are still small, are very friendly, great with kids and good watch dogs. They are adventurous and sturdy so are like a big dog in a small body but make an affectionate lap dog at the same time. The wool coat is easy maintenance too and they don't shed. A great all rounder.

Traveling is definitely something to consider before adopting a dog. Especially if it is a Golden Retriever, they just hate staying at the kennels.
Great article, thanks!

Never heard of a violent boxer due to not being trained. You should re-word that. Boxers are not violent dogs unless "trained" to be that way, just like any other dog can be.

As an owner of 6 dogs, I am not surprised that 3 of the breeds you mentioned we own. Our 3 labs are the most adaptable dogs and are very well behaved. They love to travel. Up until recently, the mini dachshound would whine a lot and drive us crazy but she has toned down. The yorkie would just go to sleep in her carry bag. The newest additon to the gang is a maltese and she is quite content just being held or close to someone just like the yorkie. We love our dogs so much, we recently purchased a motorhome so that they can travel with us. Look for wagin tails on the road.
