Top 6 Small Dog Breeds

A small dog is generally considered to be a dog that weighs less than 20 lbs. and is shorter than 16 inches. If you have an apartment and feel your space doesn’t allow for a big dog, a small dog could be the right choice for you. Or you may just love the idea of a dog that can sit on your lap and be carried.

Small dogs can be great companions but don’t think that a small dog is not as energetic as a big dog. Size doesn’t always matter when it comes to exercise and play.

If you have been considering getting a small dog here’s the top 6 small breeds that people adopt:

1: Chihuahua – they love warmer climates and may shiver if it’s too cold for them. They are great for apartments or small houses and become very loyal to their owners. They are often a one person dog, meaning, they may feel more attached to one person in the house than the other and sometimes may become protective of that person. They can be nervous but a chihuahua that is raised with good socialization skills, well-bred, and exposed to many different experiences can be a friendly, confident, and spunky little friend.

2: Dachshund – they are playful and can be stubborn. They have a reputation for chasing small birds and critters. They are often courageous, lively, and devoted to their owners. In fact, they may be aloof to strangers and seem disinterested in attention from anyone but their owners.

This breed doesn’t always know how small it is and may try to play with big dogs with any concern of being trampled or knocked over. Good socialization at an early age will help prevent shyness or anxiety. A good walk around the neighborhood a few times a day can be enough exercise for them as long as there’s also some playtime everyday.

3: Pomeranian – these fluffy guys do well living in apartments and cities. They can overheat during the summer which is why you may see some of them buzzed down and looking like a lion. They are clever, alert, playful, and often friendly.

Some may become protective of their homes and owners but many are often interested in new things and may bark to let you know “something is new!” They may not need a 3 mile walk but they will need a lot of playtime. They are goofy little guys who like to interact with people and toys. So make sure you have time everyday for your pom pom.

4: Pug – pugs are good for apartment life. They’re not super hyper but they do get overheated quickly. They are alert, sturdily built, and can be vivacious.

Pugs are often friendly and get along well with children. However, because of their wrinkles on their face, they need some extra TLC to make sure no gunk builds up in those wrinkles. They also snort and may snore due to their compact little snout. Baby pugs are often referred to as “puglets.”

5: Shih-Tzu – they are fairly active indoors and will do okay without a yard. This breed is sensitive to the heat. The sole purpose of the Shih-Tzu is to be a companion and house pet. They should be lively, alert, friendly and trusting towards all.

Shih-Tzus requires minimal exercise, but the long, luxurious coat needs daily brushing and maintenance. Be prepared to make regular appointments at a groomer to keep the fur from matting and tangling.

6: French Bulldog – these guys are clowns. They are playful, entertaining, and often look like they are smiling. Frenchies like to snuggle and snore next to their favorite person. They are sweet, lively, and alert. Take care of the wrinkles on their face, give them a good walk everyday and some play time and you’ll have a best friend for life.
