Hip displaysia is a disease in dogs where the ball and socket joint is slightly malformed. The malformation means the ball and socket don’t meet properly and results in the two grinding instead of sliding. It is believed hip displaysia may be due to genetics or a mix of environmental factors and genes. It is a common form of skeletal malformation in dogs. Large breed dogs like great danes and german shepherds tend to have hip displaysia but some small dogs may also be affected but are less likely to show the same signs.

Symptoms of Hip Displaysia

The symptoms may depend on the degree of inflammation or duration of the disease.

  • join loosenes
  • decreased activity
  • difficulty standing up after laying down
  • reluctance of jump or climb stairs
  • hind leg lameness after activity or limping
  • back legs unnaturally close together
  • grating or grinding in the joints which can be felt when moving the legs
  • loss of muscle mass
  • shoulder muscles becoming a bit larger due to more weight being exerted on the front legs as the dog tries to avoid weight on the hips

Your vet will be able to diagnose if your dog has hip displaysia with a complete physical exam. Inflammation of the joint can be detached in a blood test too. Your vet may also want to take X-rays as well. If your vet determines that your dog has hip displaysia, the treatment varies depending on age of your dog and health. Surgery may be an option as well as physiotherapy like swimming or medication. Weight control is also important to alleviate the pressure on the joints. If you notice your dog walking differently or having any of the above signs, a trip to the vet may be needed.
