Pet Friendly Hotels in Portland, ME

Since it is one of our favorite cities, we decided to take a deeper dive on pet friendly hotels in Portland, Maine, and break them out into different categories of pet friendliness. That's because not all "pet friendly" hotels are the same. And, on top of that, we all have different requirements when we travel with our pets. Some people prefer saving money by staying at mid-level or budget hotels--or those that don't charge a pet fee. On the other hand, others might feel that vacations are the perfect time to splurge and treat themselves and their pet(s) to a luxurious stay a deluxe hotel. Also, if you have a cat, your choices might be limited, so we felt it was important to highlight the Most Cat Friendly hotel so that you could be confident that your favorite feline would be welcomed with open arms. From Most Pet Friendly hotel overall to Most Dog Friendly to the best Extended Stay hotel that accepts pets--and everything else in between--we hope that you will find just the right pet friendly hotel for you and your pet on your next visit to Portland, Maine.

Pet Friendly Fireside Inn & Suites in Portland, Maine

There are numerous ways to decide what makes a hotel "Most Pet Friendly." The most obvious one would be that there is no pet fee, no size limit or quantity limit, and they accept all kinds of pets. But there are other factors beyond the written pet policy that play into it. Do they provide any amenities for pets? Do they highlight their pet-friendliness on their website? Or do they make no mention of pets being allowed? We think a big part of being pet friendly is wearing it on your sleeve and being proud to welcome pets in your establishment.

That's why we have chosen the Fireside Inn & Suites as one of Portland's most pet friendly hotels. Yes, they do charge a fee per pet, but it's not an outrageous fee. Also, they don't have a size limit, accept cats, and allow for up to 4 pets. They also provide a food bowl. Most importantly, though is that they have a lot to say about pets on their site. Put your cursor over FAQs on the top menu and what comes up? Pet-Friendly Ideas. Click on that and they give you a full list of Pet-Friendly Places in Portland, including Dog-Friendly Attractions, Dog-Friendly Beaches, Dog-Friendly Parks, Off Leash Dog Parks and Pet-Friendly Shopping.

We called to confirm that they were REALLY pet-friendly and got Chris on the phone. He went on and on about where he takes his dogs and all the pet-friendly venues in the area. He was friendly and knowledgeable, and a font of knowledge for anyone who had any questions about what to do with pets in Portland. Now, that's a hotel that takes their pets (and their owners) seriously.

Pet Friendly Inn By The Sea in Portland, Maine

The Inn by the Sea could fall under a lot categories—Most Pet Friendly, Most Luxurious, Most Pet Amenities—but we decided that Most Dog Friendly was the best heading. For one, they only accept dogs (no cats or other domesticated pets). But beyond only accepting dogs, their pet policy is perfect: No Pet Fee, No Size Limit and No Maximum Number of Pets.

As one of the first luxury beach resorts in Portland to accept pets, the Inn by the Sea knows what dogs and their owners appreciate and offer an incredible amount of amenities to keep them happy. This includes water bowls, beach towels, fleece blankets and treats at turndown. Gourmet pet menus are also available, as is a comprehensive list of nearby pet activities and places such as walking trails, pet-friendly beaches and parks. And that’s not all. They also offer an INNcredible Pets Package that takes it a step further. In addition to the previous amenities, your dog will also get a personalized L.L. Bean dog bed and L.L. Bean dog toy.

So if you’re heading to Portland, ME (the Inn is actually in Cape Elizabeth, just minutes away) and want to spoil your whole family, we can think of no better place to stay than the Inn by the Sea.

There are number of hotels that accept cats in Portland, including the La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Portland but we’re choosing the Ramada because its pet policy is slightly better in that it allows more pets (3). There is a $50 deposit but it is refundable and charged only if there is damage to your room.

We love Portland, Maine, because there are a decent amount of hotels that accept pets but don’t charge a fee. We’ve chosen the Westin Portland Harborview as the Best No Pet Fee Hotel because it has a lot to offer both pets and their owners.
