Since we've had many calls from people regarding Katrina and whether shelters for both humans and pets were available, we've decided as of 9/2/05 to put up a bulletin board dedicated to sharing information
before, during, and after the storms. If you have any information on places to stay or have questions regarding finding shelter, please
post it on our Hurricane Information Exchange. We hope this will be a help to people who are having a hard time finding places to stay, or who simply need to communicate their
particular predicament to someone else in hope for help. In the name of decency, spammers please stay off.
I don't have much news, but I'd like to correct some info that I saw on this site. Someone recommended that the 3-Dog Bakery in the French Quarter be patronized. By all means, check out the French Quarter. It's one of the most bustling areas coming back in the city. We were lucky here and didn't get a great deal of damage and what was there was either wind or water damage due to rain entering through damaged roofs and windows or from a few places that were looted. There was no flood damage. Most of the rest just needed cleaning of debris and mold. Many refrigerators and freezers bit the dirt. By the time people got home and the power was turned on everything inside them was steeped in mold and populated by tiny flies and their maggots so they had to be thrown out. They were hopeless.
Poor 3 Dog Bakery is not coming back. The population that made up their customer base didn't return quickly enough and they decided to fold their tents and silently steal away. The store is now closed and it looks like a boutique of some sort is going to open there.
Damn Katrina!

I have an unoccupied 2-bedroom house in St. Petersburg FL with a large fenced yard. I can make it available free of charge to Hurricane Katrina evacuees and their pets until January 2006. It is mostly furnished, and all utilities are operating. It is in a quiet racially mixed residential neighborhood near transportation and schools. Any number of indoor or outdoor pets are welcome. My cell phone number is 727-744-3571.

Alicia Waddles-Thibedeax. A boat picked her up along with her daughter and their dog and took them to Interstate 10. Left there on the island-awaiting pick up to take them to a shelter. Later on Interstate 10 a boat picked Alicia and her daughter up to take them to shelter but refused to take their dog with them. The dog was left behind and they want to find out where to pick up their dog, he is a liver and white dog (medium size) and answers to the name Paco. He is a very friendly pit bull Any information please email me at tabrad94@yahoo.com or wgloria851@aol.com or contact Alicia at 1-303-745-4390

Thanks to Petswelcome for putting up this exchange. I found the ASPCA has a lot of wonderful, helpful information regarding pets - rescues and relocation- from the hurricane affected areas. They also have a number to call if you've been separated from your pets. Just call 212-876-7700 and dial ext. 4700. Their website is www.ASPCA.org.
