We Love Our Pets – Photo Project

If you live in or near Portland, sign up and participate in this wonderful project by Charles Waugh, who founded Charles Fine Art Portraits. He’s begun a new photography project called We Love Our Pets.

If you want a professional photo of your pet or of you and your pet, all you need to do is sign up and pay $250. The price includes a copy of the book and all the proceeds go to the Oregon Humane Society. Your photo session is an hour long and during that time Charles will take several photos of your pet and will gladly add on a family session to that time frame as well, so take advantage of that! After the photos are taken you’ll see all the pictures and select which one will go into the book.

It’s a great project for a great cause so hurry and sign up for a session!

Oregon Humane Society is the largest and oldest humane society in the Pacific Northwest. OHS is not affiliated with any other humane society and relies entirely on private donations.

Charles Waugh has been photographing for years and lives with 2 dogs, 2 cats, 7 ducks and he loves and understands the love that owners have towards their pets. This project is a labor of love and we can’t wait to see the book!

Did you sign up, let us know!

Chicks and Ducks As Presents Are Not A Good Idea

Rabbits tend to be Easter pet presents but the care, money and time needed to take care of them can become more of a hindrance than a present if you are not 100% prepared to own one. There are many reasons not to get a rabbit as a present.

Chickens and baby ducks also tend to be given as gifts to children on Easter and as springtime birthday presents, but before you go to your garden supply shop, there are many considerations to be aware of in the care of these pets.

6 Reasons Chicks and Ducks Should Not Be Easter Presents

  1. You will be taking care of them, not your kids. Like many pet presents, once the fun and newness wears off the care and responsibility tend to fall on the shoulders of the parents. If you aren’t willing to clean up after the chickens and ducks, pay for food, care, and other supplies, and see if you need a permit from your county, then avoid these fellas as presents.
  2. Chickens and ducks are not solitary and prefer company, some places only sell them in pairs. They get very stressed out and lonely and can become troublesome or loud without a friend.
  3. They need warm, dry places to sleep that are also safe from predators such as raccoons, opossums, and cats. A heat lamp, bedding that is changed weekly or more, and close monitoring is necessary to make sure they thrive.
  4. Chickens and ducks can carry some bacteria but it’s more likely they can get sick from us. They can contract E. coli from humans and pass that on. Handwashing would need to become a must after handling them.
  5. Because of their physical build, walkways, ramps, and other structures that lead up to their sleeping and living area should have traction. A rubber mat works well to prevent them from slipping and breaking one of their soft bones.
  6. Also keep in mind, chickens and ducks can grow to be quite large, can escape a fenced yard, and may be a nuisance to your neighbors. Instead of getting your children a pet for Easter, how about some more candy and maybe a trip to the petting zoo?

PetCube – Play With Your Pet (Remotely) Anytime, Anywhere

Spending a day at work away from your pet can be tough on them. They may get lonely, whine, and when you come home they will bounce off the walls wanting to play and spend time with you. Now, there’s a new way to interact with your pet while you’re gone, it’s called Pet Cube.

Pet Cube is a new gadget that connects with your smartphone and lets you talk and play with your pet anytime you’re not at home, and anywhere you have a data connection. On your phone you can move a laser around on the floor with a joystick on the touchscreen, call him/her over to the cube in your house, and if you want, share your interactions on your social networks!

For those of us who have pets that may be super playful, this could be a fun midday play session and allow you to see how they are doing. It is also a good way to see if your anxious dog, who is in the crate, is doing well, and if needed, you can speak and soothe him/her. However, some pets might get more anxious if they hear you but can’t see you. So that could be a pet-based call.

However, the great part of Pet Cube is it also has a public option for each cube, allowing anyone to play with a pet. Shelters and rescue groups, for example, who have Pet Cube would mean you could play with a room of kittens or puppies and get to know them. It might let you know which furry friend you want to take home before you get to the shelter.

If you are interested in learning more and buying a Pet Cube, check out their Kickstarter project here.

Great Android Apps for Pet Owners

For those of us who have Android phones instead of iPhones, there are many apps available that are useful and fun for us and our pets. If you have an Android phone, the following apps can come in handy when traveling with your pet or just home but need some information at your fingertips.

  1. Pet First Aid: The Pet First Aid app is one of those you hope you’ll never need but will breathe easier knowing you have it. It’s easy-to-use with step-by-step illustrations and detailed videos, including restraint, muzzling, CPR, bandaging, and more. The nice thing is, the videos and information are available in the app, so you don’t have to worry if you are hiking and have no reception.Pet First Aid is available for $2.99 and can be downloaded here
  2. MapMyDogWalk: Wondering how far you’ve walked? Are you working on helping your pup lose those pounds in a nice, slow way? This is a great app for tracking the distance you’ve walked, pace, and calories in real-time. It will keep you motivated to continue your routines. There are also markers letting you know of dog parks, dog-friendly places, and other things you may want to look for while out and about!MapMyDogWalk is a free to download and can be found here
  3. Puptox– A great little carry around app that will let you know what items may be toxic to your cat and dog. Not sure if those flowers you are thinking of buying at Trader Joe’s are safe? Look it up! What about the candy bar your dog just ate? You can get a rough estimate of the level of toxicity by entering in your dog’s weight, the amount of food eaten, and get an idea of how severe or how sick your dog might get.Puptox is $.99 to buy and can be found here.
  4. Tagg– A great new app that lets owners know what their pet is up to 24/7. This app uses GPS and wireless tracking to record where your pet walks, runs, and hangs out. If your pet leaves an area an alert is sent to you that will help you locate and get her/him back home. The tracker attaches to your pet’s collar and the app is on your phone. This app is best for dog owners as cats have a wonderful talent for “losing their collars” while out and about. The Tagg app is available here and the tracker is available for purchase

6 Fantastic Books For Kids Who Love Pets

Not too long ago I was talking with a friend of mine about books for children. Her daughter is an avid reader and also loves her dog. I was talking about books that I had read as a kid that had mice, cats, and dogs in it who were heroes or sidekicks. Her daughter, Devin, told me about the books she’s been reading where animals are the main characters or they are the ones being saved by a group of children who are animal enthusiasts.

With the holidays coming up quickly, many of us may be wondering what to buy our kids, our nieces and nephews, and friends who have children. It’s hard to know which toy is trendy or what video game is best for them. Books, however, are never as tough.

Check out some of our favorite books for children who love animals. What animal books do your kids like best?

The Phantom Tollbooth

Norton Juster wrote this book in 1961. I read it when I was a kid and loved it. It’s the story of a bored boy named Milo who somehow gets a magic tollbooth and having nothing else to do he drives his toy car into it. He’s transported to a land called Kingdom of Wisdom and meets up with Tock, a “watchdog” with an alarm clock who joins him on his journey. The book has a ton of great puns and idioms. It’s a hero, who is just an ordinary boy, that goes on an adventure to save two princesses, Princess Rhyme and Princess Reason. My favorite character was The Dodecahedron, an inhabitant of Digitopolis who has 12 faces and each one shows a different emotion.

Warriors – Series

The Warriors is a series of books broken into 4 sub series. It is by Kate Cary, Cherith Baldry, and Tui Sutherland, and editor Victoria Holmes who all use the pseudonym, Erin Hunter. The Thunderclan, Windclan, Shadowclan, and Riverclan, and a fifth long-forgotten clan known as the Skyclan all are threatened by humans who want to build towns. They scatter and rebuild their homes in new gorge. The cats in each clan live in their own territory that they defend from the other clans. The series start off with a house kitty who yearns for adventures and meets a feral cat who is part of the Thunderclan. Allegainces shift, battles are fought, and friendships are made. Anyone who likes adventure would like this series. Start with the first series to begin entering the world of the Warriors.

Swindle – Series

The Swindle Series by Gordon Korman is a series of 4 books, Swindle, Zoobreak, Framed!, and Showoff. The books are about 2 children, Griffin Bing and Ben Slovak, who in each book end up on a quest or adventure to right wrongs and save animals. In the first book, Griffin wants back the Babe Ruth baseball card that S. Wendell Palomino (aka Swindle) bought off of him for well below the market price. In the second book, Griffin and Ben go on a hunt to save animals from a zookeeper who steals pets! The latest book, Showoff, has Luthor the dog who creates some chaos at a dog show and is accused of ruining the career of a beagle. Griffin and Ben want to save Luthor from the pound and end up running around New York City.

She can see what he sees and feels his pain and determination to live. The stray is named Zack and they become best friends but also seem to be able to reach each other’s mind. Marley: A Dog Like No Other

John Grogan’s memoir of his insane dog, Marley, was a hit movie and has now become a small series of picture books for very young children. This book has been adapted from the original memoir for children ages 8 to 12. It’s still the same naughty lab who ate the walls, ate clothing, and got kicked out of obedience school. Grogan has trimmed down his best-selling account, Marley and Me, leaving out considerable detail about the family but keeping all the hijinks in that made Marley so entertaining. The dog’s poignant last days are detailed as well. Anyone who has a pet will recognize the type of affection that exists between pets and their family even if the pet is a bit… well, hard to handle.
