Pets Welcome! Pet Friendly Colleges

Heading to college and can’t bear to leave your buddy behind? There are a few colleges that allow pets to live with the students and not just a hamster or a fish. Some colleges have pet policies that allow cats and/or dogs and horses to come to college with your children. Here’s a few colleges that allow pets in the dorms.

State University of New York At Canton allows small pets and has an entire wing dedicated to students who want to bring a small caged pet to school with them. To live in that dorm, an application and contract is necessary for all students to complete. SUNY Canton does not allow any pets that are not considered “caged” as well as birds or snakes. So for the moment, no cats, dogs, parrots, and snakes.

Sweet Briar College in Virginia has a pet policy that allows equines! Yes, bring your horse to college. However, if you’re going to do that you have to be a member of the Sweet Briar Riding Program. As for other pets? No cats or dogs but fish and other small pets like turtles are allowed.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, MA allows cats to accompany their students to school. There are four dorms that are feline friendly. As long as your roommates, suitemates, and the Residential board approves your request, your purring buddy can watch you study, help ease the stress, and meow in your ear in the early mornings. Each owner is allowed one cat that is updated with vaccines and has proper identification. So while you’re discovering new ways to make robots you can have your purring buddy at your side.

Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, PA allows pets into their one dorm, Monroe Hall. You can have a cat, a medium sized dog, small birds, hamsters, guinea pigs, and other small animals. All residents are allowed to have fish as long as the tank doesn’t exceed 20 gallons. So as long as you’re not looking to bring your Great Dane to college, you should be good to go!

Stetson University in Deland, Fl has a pet friendly policy that allows students to bring their best buddies and also promotes pet well-being. Many of the items in their pet policy pertain to safety and health of the pets. They have an entire dorm dedicated to students who have pets and it allows dogs, cats, and small caged animals. All pets must be under 30 lbs and all students must be responsible pet owners. Stetson even has a dog park on campus for students to easily exercise their dogs and make some new friends.

Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fl has one of the most accommodating pet policies of any of the colleges around. There are five dorms that are pet friendly and students are allowed to bring up to two pets as long as they are under 40 lbs. There are some limitations to what dog breeds are allowed due to the reputations the dogs have had in the news such as pitbull terriers and rottweilers. However, the policy is very flexible overall and you can bring your pet almost anywhere on campus including having them accompany you to some academic buildings.
