3 Dog Treat Recipes

As we have become more aware of preservatives and how they can harm us and our pets, more and more books, websites, and talk shows are bringing to light treats and foods we can make for our dogs too! For some of us, we are looking for healthy alternatives to the usual dog biscuits that can be food in our local grocery store. For others, our dogs may have sensitive stomachs or allergies to certain ingredients and that makes finding treats and food a little more difficult.

Here are a few recipes for dog treats that can be used as “special treats” after a great training session or as everyday treats. The great thing is, you know exactly what is in them and don’t have to worry about preservatives, dyes, or how long those treats have been in the store.

Wheat-Free Dog Cookies

1 cup of Rye flour

½ cup of milk

1 tbsp of butter or margarine

2 tbsp of sugar

1 cup of uncooked oatmeal

Combine the flour, oatmeal, sugar, and melted butter together until it’s well mixed. Slowly add the milk until the dough is sticky and firm. Knead it out and chill it for an hour. Once it’s chilled, roll it out into about a 1/4 inch thick and use a cookie cutter to create whatever shapes you want.

Grease a cookie pan and heat the oven to 350 degrees. Place the cookies on the cookie sheet and bake them for about 15 min. Let the cookies cool and then bag them up or place in an airtight container. These cookies could last up to 3 weeks but your dog may want them all in one day!

Apple Dog Treats

1 large apple

1/4 cup of honey

½ cup of water

½ tsp of cinnamon (optional)

1 cup of oatmeal

1 and ½ cups of whole wheat flour (try substituting rice flour if your dog is allergic)

Mince the apple and combine it with the honey, water, cinnamon, and oatmeal. Gradually add the 1 ½ cup of flour to form a stiff dough. Lightly grease a cookie sheet and using a spoon, place small amounts of dough about 2 inches apart from each other on the sheet. You may have a few rounds of baking to use up all the dough.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Bake for about 30 min and check the cookies. You may need to flip them over to ensure that both sides are evenly crisped and let them bake for another 25 to 30 min. Let the cookies cool and store them in an airtight container. You may get about 30 cookies from the dough depending on the size you chose to make the cookies.

Carrot Cookies

2 cups of carrots that are boiled and pureed

2 eggs

2 tbsp of garlic minced

2 cups of unbleached flour (can substitute with rice or rye)

1 cup of oatmeal

1/4 cup of wheat germ

Combine the minced up carrots, eggs, and garlic in a bowl. Mix it until it’s smooth and then add the dry ingredients. Once it’s all mixed and has become a dough, roll it out onto a heavily floured surface and cut into bars or use a cookie cutter.

Preheat your oven to 300 degrees. Place the cookies onto a cookie sheet that has been lightly greased and bake for 30 to 45 minutes till they are crunchy. The centers will harden as they cool and you can brush them with an egg white wash if you want for a glossy finish.
