Lots of fun cat and dog-related events are occurring in New Jersey the first few weeks in June 2010. They include festivals, walks, kitten showers, restaurant benefits and more family fun!

BarkFest 2010

Upton Pyne Estate

Bernardsville, New Jersey

June 6

BarkFest 2010 will be sponsored by St Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center. It will go on Sunday from 11:00 AM-3:00 PM, rain or shine. There will be a dog walk and outdoor festival going on, as well as cats and dogs up for adoption. The festival will have live music, shopping, disc playing, dog massages, dog games, kid games, food, animal communicators, contests, prizes, a grooming station, giveaways, free iced coffee and free wagon rides.

If you register for this event before June 3, this event is $15 per adult, $5 per dog, and free for children under 12. After June 3, it is $20 per adult and $5 per dog.

June 5

The Liberty Humane Society is holding a benefit at the restaurant and gallery, LITM (Love is the Message), from 5:00-8:00 PM. There is a minimum $10 donation cover, and there will be $1 raffle tickets for sale. It is a chance to eat some food and meet people in the community.

Responsible Pit Bull Ownership

June 8

This presentation will cover how to be a responsible Pit Bull owner, and will go on from 6:30-8:00 PM. It will go over many topics regarding the breed, including its history, myths, temperament, behavior, education, owner responsibility and breed issues. Kitten Shower

June 10

This kitten shower is sponsored by the Hudson County Animal League, and will start at 7:00 PM. It is the start of kitten season at the shelter (and all shelters), so appreciated donations include litter, kitten formula, food and money. For more details, contact Maureen at 201 424-5405.

Doggone Purrfect Gold Classic

June 17

This day-long event will start at 11:00 AM with registration, and then wrap up around 8:00 PM. Individual golfers are $200, and foursomes start at $650. It will feature the 18-hole course, as well as prizes, lunch and dinner.

This store’s blast-off will go on from 11:00 AM-4:00 PM, and will feature pet adoptions, free samples, product information and store discounts.

Dog Parks in Northern New Jersey

There are plenty of great dog parks around Northern New Jersey. They make for a good day trip outside of NYC! Just beware of high tolls on the bridges and tunnels, but otherwise they’re a fun time.

Riverside County Park

Lyndhurst, New Jersey

There is an off-leash dog park and playground in the greater Riverside County Park. It is secured with a four foot fence. There is ample parking, trash cans and benches. There is also a separate area for large and small dogs.


Ramapo Valley County Reservation

Mahwah, New Jersey

This isn’t an official dog park, so your dog must be on a leash. However, it is a beautiful reserve with over 2000 wooded acres. People go there to hike, fish, and observe the pond and waterfall. A good way to get in touch with nature in the midst of the most densely populated state!

Samuel Nelkin County Park

Wallington, New Jersey

This park has a dog park with separate areas for big and small dogs. The greater park has tennis courts, a softball field and a picnic area.

Wood Dale County Park

Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey

This park has an off-leash dog run. The greater park has fishing, a bike path, a playground and tennis courts.

Riverside Animal Park

North Arlington, New Jersey

This dog park is fenced-in and has some agility equipment. The fence is fairly low, so be careful your dog doesn’t jump over it!

Wild Duck Pond

Ridgewood, New Jersey

This dog park has two separate fenced areas, one for bigger and one for smaller dogs. There’s also a pond if your dog likes to jump around in the water.


Overpeck County Park Dog Run

Leonia, New Jersey

This is a small off-leash dog run located in the greater Overpeck County Park. The greater park contains a playground, running track, bike path and sports courts.

Essex County South Mountain Dog Park

Mountainside, New Jersey

This dog park has two separated areas for large and small dogs. It is a great park to visit because it comes with all sorts of slides and ramps. It also has water fountains for dogs.

Echo Lake Dog Park

Mountainside, New Jersey

This park is around 3 acres in size. Waste bags and buckets are available.

Watsessing Park Dog Park

Bloomfield, New Jersey

This dog park is fenced, and has benches, dog water fountains, and a double gated entry.

13th Annual Greyhound Friends of New Jersey Craft Show and Pet Expo

Somerset National Guard Armory

November 21, 22

This event will take place from 9:00 AM-4:00 PM on Saturday, and 10:00 AM-4:00 PM on Sunday, and is $5 for adults and free for children under 12. It will feature Linda Blair, and animal activist and actress, as well as Elwood, the ugliest dog, on Sunday. Other than these celebrities, it will also feature a raffle with crazy prizes, vendors, digital Santa photos, a holiday bake sale and much more. Leashed pets are welcome to join you.

Chance’s 8th Barkday Celebration

This is a free mini-event, and it’s a birthday party for the store’s Golden Retriever, Chance, who is turning 8. Other dogs are welcome to come visit and share dog birthday cake. They will also have special deals on their bake products and toys. There will be a holiday photographer, but an appointment is recommended for a picture. It will go on from 10:00 AM-7:00 PM.

BLC Second Annual Animal Rights Benefit

This is a benefit by BLC for the SPCA. It is free admission, and will go on from 12:00 PM-5:00 PM. There will available food, fun and festivities, like makeovers, face painting, dog fashion shows and pet contests for tricks and cutest pets.


Post-Thanksgiving Dog Play Day

This event is for humans and dogs who feel a bit sluggish after Thanksgiving. It is $15 per dog and fre per human, from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM. It’s a nice alternative to flocking to the miserable malls on Black Friday! Dogs will be separated into large and small groups, where they can run around and make new friends. Children under 12 must be supervised, and dogs must be up to date with vaccinations. You must RSVP in advance by calling: 973-252-5100.

This event is sponsored by TD Bank and is benefiting the Companion Animal Advocates. It will hold free food, music, giveaways, tricky tray, pet psychic readings, pet photographer, pet caricaturist, canine massage, veterinarian, animal rescue groups, dog trainers, boarding services, dog beauty salon and the Second Annual Delaney Dog Show. You can enter your dog into a contest for $5, such as best kisser or best trick. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated, and you are encouraged to donate some pet food.

This is an annual Halloween event to benefit the Cascade Beagle Rescue and the Eastern German Pointer Rescue. You can get a Halloween-themed picture of your dog in costume for $10, and there will be a parade at 1:00 PM, along with a prize for best costume.

This is the second annual dog-themed fundraiser for the Saint Barnabas Hospice and Pallative Care Center. It costs $10, and there will be several contests for dog costumes, like Most Original, Funniest or Best in Show. It is a family event, as there will also be many children’s activities, as well as vendors, food and beverages. Maria Milto of Classic Rock station Q104.3 will also be there. Rain date is November 1.
