Are you owned by a Westie? Do you come home from work everyday to a small, hearty, white dog whose ears are constantly moving, and spunky? Westies are amazingly bold and courageous with a prey instinct that makes them good hunters but they are also affectionate and friendly and many of us who have met or are owned by a Westie know they can be wonderful companions.
In Sept and Oct there are several Westie Walks happening that you or someone you know may want to participate in. A Westie Walk is a gathering of westies and their owners in an area such as a park and they register their dog, meet other owners, and walk for a distance anywhere from a 1/2 mile to 2 miles in a parade. Typically, there are vendors present, contests, and sometimes even a costume party. The walks tend to benefit local west rescue organizations or animal hospitals. There are usually hundreds of westies who come out for the event. They are great to watch and the dogs love it!
Here are some Westie Walks happening this month and next month around the U.S. and Canada.
If you’re in Portland, Or take your westie out on Sept 11th and participate in the Westie Walk for Dove Lewis Animal Hospital. The walk begins at 10am in Wallace Park but you must be there by 9am to register. More information can be found on their website.
Not in Portlandia? But have a westie?
Toronto Westies also get to march and show off at their annual Westie Walk and BBQ on Sept. 12 at Mississauga Valley Park. It promises to be a fun day for westies and those who love them. The walk benefits the rescue group Win (Westies in Need).
Richmond Virginia also has a Westie Walk coming up on Sept. 26. It is their 5th annual walk and benefits the River City Westies, a rescue and meetup group in Virginia. Aside from the walk itself, the day is packed with a costume contest, trick contest, a parade of the rescued westies in their new forever homes, and a silent auction. How about walking at Friendship Park and Creekside Park in Gahanna, Oh on October 9th? The walk is about 1 1/2 miles and proceeds from registering for the walk benefit the Central Ohio Westie Rescue. Registration is only $15 for one dog or $25 for two dogs. To register and learn more, visit www.westiewalk.org.
If you want to find out if there is a westie walk in your city, check with your local shelters or rescue groups.
This is great information. I have found that there is a lot of misinformation on the internet about west highland terriers. I think they are lovely dogs, with a mind of their own at times, but this is what makes them all the more endearing. And they are great fun too! I wouldn’t be without mine.
