Pet friendly Birmingham has a lot of great neighborhoods for you and your pet to explore. Downtown is the heart of Birmingham with its coffee shops, bars, breweries and restaurants. If you're up for some history--and fresh air--be sure to visit pet-friendly Kelly Ingram Park. It's the site of civil rights demonstrations back in the '60s and vividly reveals, with sculptures and mobile phone tours, the painful struggle for human rights and equality in the South. Downtown also has the Birmingham Food Park
which solves a perennial problem for pet travelers--how to eat while you have your dog or cat with you. The food park is made up of all the finest food trucks in Birmingham so all you have to do is wander (or stand in line) and pick up some chow for both of you to nibble on while sitting at picnic tables. Not a bad way to spend a day with your favorite animal.
There are tons of other neighborhoods to explore which means a lot of tromping around but you'll be rewarded for doing it. Check out Hoover, Homewood (stop by pet-friendly Chez Lulu
), Five Points South (home to the University of Alabama-Birmingham and the Black Market Bar + Grill
), the Lakeview District (great restaurants along 29th Street South), Mountain Brook (an upscale enclave with great green spaces including the Alabama Veterans Memorial and the Birmingham Botanical Gardens). If you're considering a relaxing yet fun and educational pet-friendly vacation, the Magic City should be high on your list.
