PET FRIENDLY Napa Valley

PET FRIENDLY Napa Valley

If you love wine, what better way to spend your vacation touring pet-friendly Napa Valley and its environs? And there is absolutely no reason to leave your pet behind. We've got lots of pet-friendly lodgings to choose from and our pet-friendly guide to Napa Valley's vineyards will help you set up a wine-tasting itinerary for you and your pup (well, you'll be doing tasting, not him).

Though the vineyards are certainly the main attraction, you and your pet can find plenty of ways to relax together in Napa. Definitely spend some time exploring its towns. If you find yourself in Yountville at lunchtime, be sure to visit Bouchon Bakery on Washington Street, where you can buy yourself a tuna nicoise sandwich and your canine companion a selection of pet treats enriched with foie gras, chicken stock, and bacon (bacon, bacon, bacon!!!). Stroll down the street to Veterans Memorial Park and you can both enjoy your lunch while watching bocce.

If you want to do something foody not winey (though they also produce wine in limited runs), visit Round Pond Estates in Rutherford, which produces artisanal olive oils and vinegars, and take a tour of the olive oil mill. Your pet is welcome to accompany you on leash but is not allowed inside for the olive oil and vinegar tastings.

If you're traveling in October and the timing is right, be sure to get over to the St. Helena Harvest Festival to see the Pet Parade. While it is a huge event on the local doggy social calendar, the parade has also attracted some non-canines over the years, including horses, goats, numerous rabbits, a cockatiel, and a scorpion named Roxy. There are prizes for best costume, most creative, and best owner/pet lookalike.

And if you want to do something kind of silly with your pet (actually, it sounds sillier than it is), go visit the Petrified Forest in Calistoga to check out their grove of 3 million-year-old petrified redwood trees. Your pet is welcome to explore with you on leash but make sure he doesn't try to treat these fallen giants like the local fire hydrant. Definitely not cool.
