The first thing we usually do after we arrive in a city and are comfortably checked into our room is to go out and try to find a place to eat. You certainly don’t want to be forced to leave your animal alone or order room service because you haven’t taken time to find restaurants or cafes nearby that will allow dogs or cats.
Finding one or two or three pet friendly eateries isn’t as hard as might think. First, look for places that have outdoor seating and there’s a good chance you’ll be in luck. Find a few places like this and eating out will be a joy. Most likely the proprietors will remember your pet and treat you like royalty. Also, other customers will inevitably come over and tell you that they left their pet behind and will want to say hello.
Of course, there’s always a chance of a calamitous, table-knocking-down episode brought on by undisciplined pets (or people) which might be remembered with laughs later on but is not something you really want to happen. We don’t think it will. In general, we’ve found that there’s nothing better than a well-behaved pet at a café to start conversations and to get to know people you might never have spoken to if you didn’t have your best friend along.
