Pet Friendly Oregon Coast

Hop on Highway 101 and there is a world of astonishing beauty and awesome ocean power awaiting you and your pet all along Oregon’s magnificent Pacific coast. First it starts with your choice of all kinds of pet-friendly lodgings–hotels, motels, inns, cabins, cottages, and bed and breakfasts.

If you’re talking Oregon, you’re talking beach. And you’re also talking pet-friendly beach. We’ve got to say, in all our searches across America for beaches that will welcome your pet, we’ve never seen anything quite like the Oregon coast. Almost without exception, from beaches in state parks to local coastal beaches, from Warrenton just south of the Washington border to Brookings, just north of the Carlifornia line, you and your pet can romp in the Pacific sand and surf to your heart’s content (but pay attention to local rules). Check out our pet-friendly guide to Oregon coast beaches–you’re going to love it!

The Oregon coast is so ruggedly beautiful, that’s not always about the beach. There are quite a few of scenic lookouts up and down the coast that offer amazing ocean panoramas but no access to the beach. If you’re driving by, make sure to stop and check them out with your pet on a 6-foot leash. At the Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint outside of Tillamook you and your pet can enjoy the view from 200 feet above the water. There’s also a lighthouse and several miles of hiking trails, including one that winds through a stand of old-growth spruce. Otter Crest State Scenic Viewpoint outside Newport offers a stunning lookout 500 feet over Cape Foulweather, while Port Orford Heads State Park will take your breath away with spectacular views up and down the coast from its hiking trails.

One state park you’re not going to want to miss is Darlingtonia State Natural Site. This 18-acre botanical park and its boardwalk trail (which you and your pet can explore on a 6-foot leash) are dedicated to the preservation of the carnivorous cobra lily. There’s a tale to tell when you get home. “So, how was vacation?” “It was great. Spike and I went to the beach, relaxed, and then checked out the carnivorous cobra lilies.” What’s left to say after that?

Finally (well, not finally, we’ve just begun to scratch to the surface of stuff you can do), if you like to fly kites or like to see kites flying, try to time your visit for one of the kite festivals held in the summer and fall (Lincoln City was voted one of the best places to fly a kite in North America by Kitelines magazine and holds several festivals a year; Brookings hosts a festival in the fall). You and your pet can just watch or maybe you can set your pooch up to fly her own!

So pack a bag, hop in the car, and discover the wonders of the pet-friendly Oregon coast, whale watching, kite flying, tide pooling, beachcombing, and just plain relaxing every step of the way.
