Let your pooch get in touch with his inner dalmation at this pet-friendly restaurant located in a renovated and repurposed fire station. You and your best bud can enjoy the pub-style menu on their outdoor patio. Of course for starters we like the Mini Chili Cheese Char Dogs but their Disco Fries, topped with pulled pork, chili con queso, and jalapenos are also awesome (and almost dinner in itself!). They’ve also got hearty sandwiches and burgers, and Detroit-style pan pizza with multiple different toppings to choose from. There is brunch on the weekends with great selections like Pepper and Egg Bagel Club and Blueberry Waffles. Open Monday 4:30 to 10 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Stop by for a beer (they’ve got 15 on tap), to partake of their extensive collection of whiskies, or to have a glass of wine or a cocktail. They also offer classic pub grub including Bangers and Mash, Dublin Coddle (bacon and sausage stew), and Scotch Eggs, and much more, which you can share with your canine in their pet-friendly outdoor seating area. There is also brunch on Sunday and Moira’s Afternoon Tea, offered on Wednesdays and Saturdays 2 to 4 p.m. Open Monday through Thursday 11:30 a.m. to 1 a.m., Friday & Saturday 11:30 a.m. to 2 a.m., Sunday 11 a.m. to midnight.
That's all well and good but we love Northwestern and give it a pet-friendly thumbs up because last year their Center for the Performing Arts adapted and set to music what is one of our favorite books of all time, P.D. Eastman's classic Go, Dog. Go! It was meant to be an exploration of movement and color and was specially adapted to create an environment comfortable for those with autism and other sensory issues. We hope it will be coming to stage near us soon!
And speaking of your dog going, there aren't any dog runs right in Evanston but there are three not far away that are part of the Forest Preserves of Cook County and feature wide open grassy expanses for your pup to run. You do need to purchase an annual membership to use them but if you are going to be visiting your student regularly, we think it might be worth the expense.
If you're looking for a pet friendly place to eat, you've got plenty of choices in Evanston. Firehouse Grill has a pub style menu that also includes Detroit pan pizza, which you can enjoy with your canine on their patio. They also offer brunch on Sunday. For something totally different, try Flattop Grill, which allows you to mix and match your own unique combination of vegetables, proteins, and Asian-style sauces.
