The hotel is bird and animal themes, which gives it some whimsy. It also has a classic, "old hotel" gravitas which I realize seems like a contradiction. Staff is friendly and helpful. Rooms are spacious and comfortable. The restaurant attached to the hotel, The Finch, served me an excellent steak (kudos to the chef!) one night and a delicious chicken sandwich the next.

The Royal Sonesta Downton Portland is located near the city’s main attractions and restaurants. Good breakfast, nice bar and restaurant —open only a few days a week; very good service and generally a pleasant atmosphere. The lobby has a piano, it is beautifully decorated and is a welcoming and inviting spot. Recommended for business or pleasure.

We came to the Royal Sonesta last minute after a very bad experience at another hotel in town and they were perfect. The front desk was very helpful in getting our room arranged and explaining the details. The room was large and clean, very fun designs and worked great. The bed was by far the best bed I've ever slept in at a hotel in my life and made the entire stay worth it. The only thing with the room is that the doors were a little squeaky and a minor mixup with the keys when we used the valet but the hotel fixed it all and we had a wonderful stay. The breakfast is also very good even though it's not included. Overall this is a fantastic hotel and I would stay there again in a heartbeat.

We love it here

A cute a quirky location. The decor was so fun and we tried every chair in the lobby. (The two armchairs by the fireplace won our impromptu chair rating contest.) Valet was easy and quick. Very friendly staff with a welcoming atmosphere.

Have stayed here before and really like the hotel. It’s eclectic and the staff are personable. There’s some inconsistency though. We had difficulty with our television. They offered to let us switch rooms but didn’t offer to upgrade the room. The curtains don’t black out the room (at least in the corner rooms) so early morning sun was somewhat bothersome. The amenities/resort fee (as with ALL hotels) is a joke. Hotels can give their guests WiFi for free in this day and age. The $15 food credit buys a candy or chips and nothing they have adds up to $15 so you either underspend or pay more than your allowed amount. They don’t even upgrade your WiFi; you have to pay more for that, of course. All in all a solid place to stay but Sonesta could do more for their guests and become better than their competitors.

An excelente place to stay. The bed and pillows were super confortable and the stand very attentive and helpful.
