County Emergency Management Services and Shelters in Mississippi

Mississippi doesn't have a long coastline (only 359 miles) but being centrally located on the Gulf coast puts it at prime risk for being hit by a hurricane. Of all the states, it is has the 8th highest number of hurricanes, with nineteen making landfall since 1851. And the storms that do make landfall tend to be very powerful. The good news is, that with 6 coastal counties, each with a dedicated emergency management agency, residents have a great resource to help them and their pets stay safe in the event of a pending storm.

One of the strongest storms was Hurricane Camille, a category 5 storm, that hit on August 17, 1969, causing one of the largest storm surges ever--24.6 feet in Pass Christian, MS. Another huge storm. Katrina plowed into Mississippi coast in August of 2005 after crossing over southern Florida. Though it was weakened to a category 3 storm, it hit the same area as Camille causing devastating damage.
