Virginia has 3, 315 miles of coastline and is ranked 10th of all the states with the highest number of hurricanes in the US.--12 hurricanes since 1851, none of them a direct landfall from the Atlantic Ocean. Of those hurricanes, none were major hurricanes (at least category 3). Ten were category 1 and two were category 2.
Most hurricanes that hit Virginia are storms that come from the Gulf and pass over land before hitting the state. However, one of the most powerful storms, Hurricane Isabel, made landfall on the Outer Banks of North Carolina in September 2003 and moved to the Hamptons Roads of area of Virginia causing huge damage and the most deaths of any state. Hurricane Camille in 1969 also caused incredible damage in Virginia.
Virginia has 15 coastal counties along the Atlantic coast and Chesapeake Bay and its many inlets, each one with its own Emergency Management agency (listed below). With so much water in and around the state, these agencies have gained a lot of knowledge regarding how to deal with the flooding and destruction that hurricane's bring and they have many plans and protocols in place to keep families and their pets safe.
