North Carolina is tied with Louisiana as the state with the 3rd highest number of hurricanes in the US, with 56 hurricanes making landfall since 1851. One of the reasons North Carolina gets so many hurricanes is because its coastline extends out into the ocean, making it vulnerable to direct strikes from storms coming from the south.
While North Carolina has never had a category 5 hurricane, it's certainly had its share of devastating storms. These include, Hurricane Hazel in 1954, a category 4 storm with wind gusts of 106 mph, Hurricane Florence in 2018, with 35.93 inches of rain and wind gusts also of 106 mph, and Hurricane Floyd in 2018 with 24.06 inches of rain and wind gusts of 138 mph.
North Carolina has 14 coastal counties that all have Emergency Management units that have a strong expertise in Hurricane Preparedness and Emergencies. With such a large percentage of hurricanes hitting the state, you can be sure they have a deep well of knowledge and experience to inform and assist local residents so that their families and pets stay out of harm's way in the event of a weather emergency.
