North American Reptile Breeder’s Conference and Trade Show

Anaheim Convention Center

The NARBC will take place on Saturday from 10:00 AM-5:00 PM, and on Sunday from 11:00 AM-4:00 PM. Admission prices are $15 for adults, $8 for children under 13 and free for children under 5. Reptile vendors and experts will be there to communicate to the public. This show will also feature educated speakers to address the audience on subjects like going on African safaris, keeping tortoises and maintaining large snake collections.

Texas Reptiles Expo

The Texas Reptiles Expo will be from 10:00 AM-5:00 PM on both days. Passes cost $8 for adults one day (or $14 for two days), and $3 for children under 10 for one day (or $5 for two days).

West Alabama Reptile Expo

September 11, 12

WARE will occur both days from 9:00 AM-4:00 PM, and will have amphibians and insects in addition to reptiles. A raffle will be drawn hourly, and people will be face painting on Saturday. A few different educational seminars will be held, and there will also be an assortment of different vendors selling useful supplies. Admission to WARE is $5, or $1 for children under 12.

CRABS will feature vendors from different parts of the United States showing their captive-bred and high-quality import animals. The hours for this show are 10:00 AM-4:00 PM, and it costs $5 for anyone over the age of 5.

Great Lakes Reptile Expo

Vendors from around the Midwest will be set up at the Great Lakes Reptile Expo, selling cages, rodents, snakes, lizards and more. This exposition is $5 for adults, or free for children 10 and below.

Kansas City Reptile Show

This Sunday show will have a variety of vendor tables selling reptiles, and maybe even some small exotic animals. If you have a hungry reptile at home, this is a chance to buy anything from pelleted food to meal worms to crickets to live or frozen rodents. Those who are short on pet supplies have a chance to pick up bedding, toys, cages, tanks and decorative materials. The Kansas City Reptile Show is going to be held from 10:00 AM-4:00 PM, and will cost $5 for adults, $3 for children 6-12, or free for those under 5.

Dog-Friendly Vacationing in Grand Rapids, Michigan

Grand Rapids, Michigan, is the second largest city in the state, after Detroit. It is situated on the Grand River, not far from Lake Michigan. This city has a fair amount of culture going on, as well as a couple great dog parks in the area and some other outdoor attractions and activities.

Grand River Sculpture and Fish Ladder

This sculpture was created by Joseph Kinnebrew to assist the fish in their struggle going upstream, and also providing the visual component of this situation to the public. Humans and leashed dogs are welcome to observe this interesting structure.

Parks

Pet Supplies Plus Off-Leash Dog Area

This off-leash dog area is located in greater Hillcrest Park. It is fenced in and divided into one area for small dogs and puppies, and another for big dogs. There are benches and trash cans in this park as well, and sometimes dog bowls for owners to bring their own water.

Shaggy Pines Dog Park

The Shaggy Pines Dog Park is located in Ada, Michigan. It is a private park that dog owners must pay to use. However, it has 20 fenced-in acres where dogs can roam off-leash in the rolling hills. This park is very nicely developed, as there is a one-mile trail through the grounds which is maintained during winter months. There are also two large dry areas for dogs when it gets muddy, water stations, a mountain for climbing and digging and a small dog swimming pond.

If your dog gets messy while having lots of fun at this park, they have a self-service dog wash!

Yankee Springs Recreation Area

The Yankee Springs Recreation Area is located in Middleville, Michigan. The park encompasses over 5,000 acres, with areas of lakes, streams, bogs and marshes. There is an existing 30-mile trail system in this park, as well as nine lakes and some interesting rock formations. Dogs are allowed in this park as long as they are on a leash of less than 6 feet.

The Downtown Center is a tree-lined area that has old-fashioned brick buildings, along with little shops, cafes and restaurants. Leashed dogs are allowed to walk around outside the establishments, but you must ask their staff if they are allowed inside.

This family restaurant is open for dinner, and has a menu that changes seasonally with fresh ingredients. Leashed dogs may sit at the outer tables.

Upcoming Pet Events in Michigan

This summer will be filled with all sorts of lovely pet events for all of those who will be in Michigan. There will be cat adoption events, dog races, low cost-vaccination clinics and other fun things to do!

Marquette Sunrise Dog Dash

The Marquette Sunrise Dog Dash will be part of the greater 4th of July Festivities, all themed under “Freedom Rocks.”

The Dog Dash will occur on the island of Picnic Rocks, starting at 8:00 AM. Registration will go on 7:15-7:45 AM, and costs $10 for entry. They will give awards to the four fastest dogs, and there will also be a dog costume contest following the race.

Low-Cost Vaccinations and Microchipping

The Michigan Humane Society will be putting on a low-cost vaccination and microchip clinic at Canine to Five from 10:00 AM-2:00 PM. There will be low-cost vaccinations against Distemper, Rabies, Parvovirus and other diseases for cats and dogs of appropriate age. Owners can also pick up pet licenses at this clinic. Animals must be leashed or in carriers, and appropriate proof of low income is necessary.

This will be the fourth annual Pet Fest, put on by the Pet Emporium. It is the largest pet festival in southeastern Michigan, and will go on from 10:00 AM-5:00 PM. Admission itself is free, but parking is $2. There will be a variety of rescues and shelters, along with demonstrators, vendors and exhibitors.

Bully Summer Splash Bash

The Bully Summer Splash Bash will take place from 10:00 AM-4:00 PM, and there will be all sorts of fun activities, including dock diving, weight pulling, dog agility, dog scootering and more. It will go on from 11:00 AM-4:00 PM, and is meant to benefit the pit bull adoption program of the Dearborn Animal Shelter.

Cocker Spaniel Clubs in the United States

There are a few Cocker Spaniel clubs around the United States that are involved in competitions and preserving the breed. There are also a few rescue groups that help foster and re-home Cocker Spaniels.

Some of these groups and rescue groups are inclusive to both American Cocker Spaniels and English Cocker Spaniels, but others are more specific to the Cocker Spaniel breed.

The American Spaniel Club

The American Spaniel Club was established in 1881 and is still very active today. They hold some educational seminars, which overview the general care of Cocker Spaniels and how to present show dogs to judges. Their website contains valuable information on the breed standard.  They are also involved with the ASC Annual Flushing Spaniel Show, and the Cocker Spaniel National. If you are interested in adopting a Cocker Spaniel, they also do breeder referral.

English Cocker Spaniel Club of America

The English Cocker Spaniel Club of America is dedicated to preserving the standard of pure-bred English Cocker Spaniels, encourage participation at dog shows, conduct sanctioned matches and specialty shows and encourage other local Cocker Spaniel clubs in such actions. It was founded in 1935 and incorporated in 1945. They also have resources devoted to Cocker Spaniel rescue, and they also have breeder referrals. They are involved in many different dog events and competitions, like hunt tests, national specialties and more.

Florida Cocker Spaniel Rescue

The Florida Cocker Spaniel Rescue is a nonprofit group that cares for the dogs and then finds them homes. It is based out of Land O Lakes, Florida. They have many male and female Cocker Spaniels that are up for adoption.

Heart of Michigan English Cocker Spaniel Club

This club was formed in 1959, and is an AKC-licensed club. They hold several Cocker Hunting events; in May, they hold 2 hunting tests for Flushing Spaniels, and in September, they hold 2 hunting tests for American and English Cocker Spaniels. They also have someone who does breeder referral, and has an active rescue program.

Cocker Spaniel Rescue of East Texas

This rescue group is based in Houston, and is a nonprofit group that has about 40 volunteers with 30 different homes. They have lots of very cute adoptable dogs.

English Cocker Spaniel Club of Northern California

This Cocker Spaniel club is involved in many Cocker Spaniel activities, such as conformation, agility, obedience and hunting. They also do breeder referrals. Those who are interested in membership are required to attend at least two club activities within a 6 month period and then apply.

Ann Harbor, Michigan, has a great selection of pet stores for a variety of all sorts of pets. A couple of them have awesome travel products.

Dogma Catmantoo

This pet store was opened by a two people, one being veterinarian who is knowledgeable about high-quality pet food and supplements. They also sell books and other products about how to keep your pet healthy.

This store also sells many fun products, like plush dog beds, collars, harnesses, leashes, cat toys, dog toys, bowls and even human apparel. They carry a bunch of great products for traveler dogs, such as a car seat tube and even a dog tent! It is meant to be a place where humans and their pets can shop, learn and hang out.

Green Pawz Pet Supply

This pet store is located in the Maple Village Shopping Center. Their motto is “Love your pets & your planet!” They sell a supply of healthy pet foods that were made in the USA, and have no chemicals, by-products or artificial preservatives. You can ask the staff how to read pet food labels, so you can educate yourself on what you are feeding your pet.

There are also many other eco-friendly pet products for cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, hamsters, mice, rats and guinea pigs. This store holds dog adoption events, and there are cat adoption events every third Sunday of the month.

University Aquarium and Pet Shop

This store has been serving the Ann Arbor area for over 40 years, and is independently owned and operated. They offer a variety of services, including commercial and residential aquarium set up and maintenance, pet tag engraving, free water testing, bird wing and nail grooming, collar rental. You can even rent a black light. They also sell a great range of products, for aquariums, birds, cats, dogs, small animals and reptiles. They sell some pets as well.

Naughty Dog Cafe

Naughty Dog Cafe is Ann Arbor’s original treat bakery. They bake a variety of natural and healthy dog treats, and sell holistic dog foods. There is also cage free boarding for a small group of dogs (5-7 at a time), where they walk the dogs three times a day.

The Four-Legged Socialite

This boutique is locally owned and operated, and is in the Briarwood Mall. They carry a variety of dogs, pet clothing, collars, grooming products, pet toys, interactive cat toys, and training products. They carry some interesting travel products, like on-the-go water feeders and cat car harnesses.

Upcoming Reptile Shows in the Midwest

The Midwest has a few awesome reptile shows coming up next month. A couple of them are in major metropolitan centers, if you’re interested in exploring some Midwest culture for a vacation. All of the listed shows display different types of reptiles, and possibly some other types of animals. Western Michigan Reptile Expo

This show has been going on for four years, and happens throughout the year. There will be snakes, lizards, turtles, frogs, pocket pets, feeders and supplies. People go there to buy, sell, and trade. It goes on from 10:00 AM-4:00 PM; it is $4 admission, $1 for children ten and under.  There is available food, and the place is handicap accessible with free parking.

Saint Louis Reptile Show

This event has been going on for a decade, and is held a few times throughout the year. There are breeders and dealers of many different reptiles, amphibians, small mammals and related animals from around the Midwest. There are generally three dozen vendors set up over 50 tables. This event occurs from 10:00 AM-4:00 PM. Admission is $6 for people over 12, $3 for children between 5-4, and free for children under 4.

Pet Stores in Detroit, Michigan

Upcoming Midwest Reptile Shows

The Midwest has a few organizations that have been holding reptile shows a few times a year, for continuous periods of time. Because of such a strong history, there’s no doubt these will be quality. You can go to one if you are in the area, or make a fun trip out of it this autumn!

Kalamazoo Reptile Show

This is Michigan’s biggest reptile show, which occurs 12 times throughout the year! You will be able to buy a wide variety of reptiles, amphibians and other exotic animals. Every animal sold at the show is eligible for a free vet exam at Milwood Animal Clinic. There will be many vendors with services like sugar glider education and rescue, and captive bred boas, small mammals, and colorful bearded dragon morphs. Admission is $4 for anyone over 10, $2 for children under 10, $3 for Michigan students from the state universities, and free for children under 6.

This show has over 100 tables, and occurs about 20 times throughout the year. It is open to the public 10:00 AM-3:00 PM. It costs $5 for anyone over 10. It is mostly reptile based, but there are vendors also with birds, sugar gliders, hedgehogs and more, so it’s the place to go if you love all sorts of pets. There will also be goods like dry beds, cages, air purifiers and quality food.

This event is held several times a year, and has been going on for over ten years in the St Louis area. It will occur from 10:00 AM-4:00 PM, but you should get there before 3:00. It costs $6 for children 12 and up, $3 for kids 5-11, and free for children 4 and under. There will be breeders and dealers, mainly related to reptiles, but also some amphibians, small animals and other exotic pets, on over 50 tables.

This event is held 6 times a year, this being the final event of 2009. There will be many vendors selling supplies like cages, customs wearables for reptile lovers, breeding tubs, insects, worms and frozen rodents. They will also hold live animals like poison dart frogs, boas, pythons, geckos and more! It is $5 for adults and children over 9. It will take place from 10:00AM-4:00PM.

There will also be crazy games, like paper bag escape, sock it to ’em, best costume, ferret jockey, car race and strongest ferret! There will also be vendors available to purchase all types of ferret food and accessories. It costs $1 to enter your ferret in each game. As for humans, it costs $4 for adults and $2 for children under 12, or free for children under 6. Vet check begins at 8 AM, the public can come in at 9 AM, and judging begins at 10.

This will be a fun event, but you must RSVP. It will go on from 2PM-late. It will be held outdoors, on 17 acres of wooded grounds. Admission is either $10 without food, or $20 with food, with both meat and vegetarian options. It is a family all-day event, and they will host a bonfire at night. It is a humans-only event. You even have the option of camping there.

A Ferret Spooktacular Event

The Floridians know that ferrets and Halloween are the best combination out there. This event will host guest speakers, raffle prizes, a silent auction, dinner and a ferret costume photo contest. It costs $6 for humans, $3 for children. It will go on from 6PM-9PM. RSVP required.
