Are you looking for a Vermont vacation for the history books and want to ensure the WHOLE family can come along? We know some of your most important family members have four legs and need a break just as much as the rest of us. The Landmark Trust USA is a nonprofit historic preservation organization offering overnight rentals of whole houses in authentically restored historic properties in beautiful Southern Vermont. We know that as a dog lover, you like doing good, and when you stay at a Landmark, every dollar goes back to keeping these historic places and their stories alive. They are glad to welcome up to two dogs at two of their most scenic properties.
The Sugarhouse at Scott Farm in Dummerston is a charming 1-bedroom cabin at the edge of a maple sugarbush, a maple tree stand still used for maple sugaring. It was built in 1915 to house the boilers that converted raw sap to maple syrup. Located on the grounds of the 571-acre Scott Farm and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The Sugarhouse is a cozy retreat complete with gas fireplace. During the fall, guests can sample 130 varieties of heirloom apples, pie, freshly pressed cider, hard cider, and pick-your-own. The picturesque Farm was even a key filming location for the Academy Award-winning movie The Cider House Rules and is replete with stunning stone walls constructed by the expert builders at The Stone Trust! Dog-friendly trails at the Farm and within a 15-minute drive are abundant, and the bustling shops, restaurants, brew pubs, and arts venues of Brattleboro, winner of the 2023 Strong Towns Strongest Town contest, are just 10 minutes away, too. Ramunto’s Pizza has pet-friendly outdoor seating as does India Masala House and The Porch.
In nearby Whitingham on 30 private acres rests the 3-bedroom Amos Brown House. Built in 1802 and inhabited by Carthusian monks, and furnished with period furniture, this brick cape-style home retains much of its original detail. The solitude and open space make it a distraction-free retreat for yoga, writing, art, focused work, stargazing, or catching up on reading. Dogs love the vast open fields and forests on the property. As one guest noted, “Our dog smiled throughout the adventure as ‘city dog’ was able to play like a ‘country dog.'”
Hiking, bicycling, bird watching, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling are all right out the front door, and the Harriman Reservoir, just 6 miles away, features abundant recreation opportunities. You’re only half an hour from skiing and snowboarding at Mount Snow and 20 minutes from the shops and restaurants of Wilmington. In Wilmington, the Anchor Seafood Restaurant has a dog-friendly porch, and Wahoo’s Eatery has all dog-friendly outdoor seating. The charms of Western Massachusetts – from the exquisite Bridge of Flowers to ziplining with Zoar Outdoor to rafting- are also nearby. You can also see world-class art at MASS MoCA. Mass MoCA doesn’t allow pets anywhere on the grounds, but if you have someone who’d rather hang with the dog while you hit the gallery, the North Adams Dog Park is just a block away.
Both properties are outfitted with dog beds, bowls, and towels to ensure your pup feels right at home, and there is no additional pet fee. Want exquisite dining right at home with your dogs? The Landmark Trust USA also offers personal chef services with first-class chefs eager to create individualized menus featuring local ingredients for you.
Dogs own the best people, and the Landmark Trust USA looks forward to welcoming your happy canines (and YOU!) on your next visit to Vermont.
