Lubbock, Texas, is a city of about 250,000 people, and is located in the northwest part of the state. It is the home of Texas Tech University. Its nickname is “hub city,” because it has been a center for the economy, health care and education of the South Plains region. In terms of traveling with your dog, this city has a few interesting outdoor museums and agrarian tourist spots to check out, as well as a couple nice parks.

Attractions

American Museum of Agriculture

This agriculture museum is there to preserve the history of American farming, tell its story and instill pride in the visitors and contributors. It was created in part to tell the story of West Texas, which has been an continuous cotton-growing region. It has lots of restored farm equipment like tractors, a threshing machine and others. Leashed dogs can go throughout the grounds, but not in the buildings.

American Wind Power Center and Museum

The American Wind Power Center and Museum is a non profit center that interprets the relation between humans, environment and technology. Dogs on leash can go on the grounds of the museum, but not in any of the indoor parts.

Llano Estacado Winery

This winery is located on an interesting estate, and has an assortment of red, white and dessert wines. Leashed dogs can be on the grounds, but not in any of the buildings.

Apple Country Orchards

Apple Country Orchards contains 6,000 apple trees with 30 different varieties. Visitors can pick their own apples or buy some pre-picked ones or baked goods. Leashed dogs can go on the grounds but not inside.

Buffalo Springs Lake

Buffalo Springs Lake is located just five miles south of Lubbock, where people and leashed dogs can enjoy many outdoor leisurely activities. They also host many festivals and events throughout the year.

Buddy Holly Recreation Area

This park is full of many amenities, including benches, a party house, a picnic area, places to fish, restrooms, a waterfall and a 1.8 mile walking area. Leashed dogs are allowed to join you.

McCullough Park

McCullough Park is well-equipped with benches, a playground, fish areas, restrooms, a volleyball court and a .8 mile walking track. Leashed dogs may join their owners at this park.

The expo will take place on Saturday from 10:00 AM-5:00 PM, and on Sunday from 11:00 AM-4:00 PM. It costs $8 for a single day, or $12 for both days, and children under 5 with an adult are free.

Ontario Reptile and Exotic Pet Expo

Mighty Texas Dog Walk

This will be the third annual giant dog walk, which has broke the Guinness World Records for the past two years as largest dog walk! It is a three-mile stroll through downtown Austin that will go on from 9:00 AM-12:00 PM. Upon completion of the walk, dogs will receive gold metals and humans will receive T-shirts. Vendors will also be there to give away dog product freebies.

To participate, it costs $25 if you pre-register, and $30 if you register the day of the event.  It is meant to benefit the Texas Hearing and Service Dogs organization.

Spring Bark

Spring Bark will be the sixth annual fundraiser that will go on from 9:00 AM-2:30 PM. It will feature lots of fun events, including agility and frisbee demonstrations, dog good citizen classes, various contests, a silent auction, booths for local rescue groups and $20 pet microchipping. There will also be raffle items.

If you wish to attend, it is $25 for pre-registration, and $30 for registration at the event. Part of the proceeds will go to local rescue groups.

Dog-Friendly Vacationing in Dallas, Texas

Dallas, Texas, is a big city that is a center for banking, commerce, telecommunications, energy and transportation. There are a ton of things to do in this city, whether you are into culture, sports, nature or eating good food. There are many different neighborhoods throughout Dallas to explore.

Dogs are welcome in many of the great tourist and local attractions of Dallas.

Dallas Foundation Self-Guided Walking Tours

You can order a self-guided tour map from the Dallas Foundation. There are a few different suggestions to check out the sculptures downtown, and the tours can also pass through the Arts District, Downtown and City Hall. Pegasus Plaza is also an interesting spot to check out, with carved stones and a fountain. Dogs are allowed to join you throughout this tour if they are on leash.

Old City Park

This attraction is located south of downtown Dallas, and is within 13 acres of wooded land. This is a live-action history museum, where actors display farm life back in the 1860s.

There are also 38 historic structures, a traditional Jewish house, Victorian houses, a school, a church and historic shops. You can buy tickets on site at the ticket office. This park is open Tuesday to Saturday, but closed on most major holidays.

McKinney Avenue Trolley

Dogs can join you on these five authentic trolley cars for a four mile tour of Dallas, going uptown and downtown. They must be leashed and well behaved. The ride is free for humans and dogs! This service is open daily until 10:00 PM, or until midnight on Friday and Saturday.

This is a 633 acre nature preserve, and there are 10 miles of hiking trails. Dogs are allowed to accompany you on a leash for a long hike. Some of these trails are very easy, but some are advanced.

Dog-Friendly Vacationing in San Antonio, Texas

San Antonio, Texas, is a major tourist attraction of the state. It is a pretty big city, with a population of 1.3 million, but is sprawled out. It has a strong military presence, as well as many historical attractions. The city is fun for dogs as well.

La Villita

If you and your dog like history, this is a good place to walk around. It was the original settlement of Old San Antonio, located in the south bank of the river. It started out as a primitive hut settlement for Spanish soldiers. Today, it is a vibrant artsy area full of Victorian and Adobe buildings, where you can do historic walks and window shop.

The Riverwalk

This is the second biggest tourist attraction in Texas, after the Alamo (dogs can’t go in the Alamo). Your leashed dog can join you for this journey. It is a two mile walkway along the river, and you can people watch at the many restaurants on its premises.

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park

This park has scenic trails that connect many of the old mission sites. Dogs are allowed to walk around with you on leash, but cannot go in any of the buildings or actual sites of the remanents. Dogs are forbidden from the Yanaguana Nature Trail at the Mission San Juan.

Brauing Lake Park

This park is located on Brauing Lake, which sprawls for 1,350 acres. Many people come here to fish and boat, as well as camp, picnic and bird watch. Swimming is forbidden in the lake. There is a small fee to visit this park, but dogs may join you on leash.

Eisenhower Park

This park has five miles of trails to hike with your leashed dog, as well as a picnic area and a playground.

McAllister Dog Park

This is an off-leash dog park, which is fenced-in and has 1.5 acres of land. There is also exercise equipment, a picnic area with shade, benches, and  a walking trail. Dogs must be up-to-date with all vaccinations and license.

Houston, Texas, has some of the best dog parks in the country within its surrounding premises. Since Houston is a hot place, many of the parks come with running water for both dogs and humans, as well as shaded areas for your comfort. Make sure you read the dog park rules before you head to them.

This popular park is located in West Houston, and is over 20 acres. It is double-gated and fenced, and open every day dawn to dusk. There is a separate area for big and small dogs, each with its own playing features. It has available dog waste bags, water fountains, dog showers, benches, many trees, long walking trails, shaded areas and its own parking lot. Perfect!

Maxey Park and Run Dog Park

This park is located in East Houston, and is a large next park with a human park next to it. It is triple gated and fenced, and has separate big and small dog areas. Open dawn to dusk. It comes with dog waste bags, water fountains, dog shower, large trees with plenty of shade area, benches, and information kiosk, portable restroom and information desk. There is a small parking lot.

Danny Jackson Dog Park

This park comes with separate big and small dog areas, as well as ponds, new trees, benches and a walking path.

Baytown Dog Park

This is a new park of five acres. It has new trees, a walking path, covered awnings, waste bags, human and dog water fountains and benches. There is a separate area for large and small dogs, and the large dog park has agility equipment. If you want to go for a walk, there is connection to wooded trails and you can walk with your dog on a leash.

Bay Area Dog Park

This is a new park of over five acres. It has separate large and small dog areas. It also has a walking path, dog and human water fountains, waste bags, dog shower stations and picnic tables. It is very shady, which is useful for the hot climate.
